MADNESS BECOMING A NATURAL OBJECT
Mental illness is a condition of the mind meaning it is often physically unidentifiable but can become more apparent as symptoms progress. These usually challenge the sensibilities and social comforts of those who have not experienced it. Historically, the fate of those who do were quickly labelled as ‘insane’ and often institutionalised, stigmatising the condition, and made subject of experimental medical intervention and documented by the camera in the pursuit of science.
My interest in mental health originates from its misunderstood history and photographer’s moving on from its objective draconian practice to creating work that expresses subjective and informed representation.
Madness Becoming a Natural Object is a visual study of an imagined projection of mental images impacted by various bouts of personal illness. Emotions are represented and replaced by objects within the domestic space.
