PHYSICAL PRESENT MENTALLY ABSENT

50, Black and White Analogue Prints,  Matt Fibre Base, 12x12cm

Mounted On Black Painted 25cm Thick MDF.

Mentally Absent refers to mental health traits such as daydreaming and mind wondering, people like to escape reality either for creative means or due to triggers in their environment. Personally, my daydreaming occurs in high social situation, which is why I have photographed in Manchester and Derby city centres. The photographs are personal to my mental absent behaviours but with the mundane characteristics to the work, the audience can engage with which ever images start their daydreaming traits.

The bodywork represents images that are my point of view when I’ve been out photographing and I have become stressed and anxious this allows my mind to start wondering plus cause me to daydream. This creates a train of thoughts and opinions which causes me to be distracted from what is in front of me. Images are mundane so that others can look at the images and find an interest in them, which will then cause a ripple effect and the audience can start their own chain of thoughts and feelings, emotions, and opinions about whatever they want or start to daydream about what they’re looking at and just allowing the mind to wonder.

To create the circle, I shot in 35mm films. This was to represent the paced and speed of the thoughts, that can be in and out of my mind that can be very quick and I wanted this to be represented in the method of photographing. I used a hole puncher to cut the circles out of the negatives, the circular perspective was also to show that you’re looking into someone, something else and possibly someone else’s perspective which you then take on your own thoughts from.

Within this work, I’m supporting people that constantly use this method of daydream and mind wandering due to either stress/ mental health issues, or as a process to be creative and successful in whatever field they are in.
