THE ISOLATION OF TOYS
Covid-19 Response
Research shows children are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety due to the Coronavirus lockdown, as it has interrupted the socialising and educational support needed at this formative developmental stage. Young children are being exposed to adult problems and emotions, creating unknown consequences of its long-term effects. This body of work is my response to the Coronavirus outbreak, with a deeper interest in its impact on the wellbeing of young children. Using soft toys, each located within typical domestic environments, I have symbolically represented this demographic within a series of photographs. Such toys are commonly used as companionship and emotional support tools for young children, making them feel safe during traumatic times. By placing them in these contexts, I’m visually exploring the potential emotional risk as usual routines of education and socialisation are compromised.
